Photo Book TipsYear in Review Photo Book: A Month-by-Month Guide
Your phone already holds the whole year. Here is how to turn thousands of photos into a printed book of 12 to 20 pages that you will actually open again.

Quick answer: a year in review photo book works best when you give each month its own spread or half-spread, choose two to four photos per month, write one short caption for each, and print it at 12 to 20 pages. Twelve pages suits a light recap, while 16 to 20 pages gives room for festivals, trips and a few full-page favourites. The hard part is not the design. It is sorting a year of phone photos, and this guide shows how to do that in an evening.
Why a yearly photo book beats a phone gallery
Most of us take thousands of photos a year and look at almost none of them again. The gallery is sorted by date, mixed with screenshots, receipts and forwarded memes, and the good moments get buried by March. A printed book forces a small, useful decision: what actually mattered this year?
That decision is the real gift. When the book is done, you hold a story with a beginning, middle and end, and it is easy to hand to your parents, your partner or your children. Many families in India already do this informally with a Diwali-to-Diwali or April-to-March recap. A book simply makes it last longer than a WhatsApp status.
The month-by-month structure
Month by month is the simplest structure because your phone already stores photos by date. Here is a Jan-to-Dec outline with the kind of moments each month usually holds in an Indian household. Swap in your own.
- January: New Year plans, Makar Sankranti or Pongal, kite-flying on the terrace, a first selfie of the year.
- February: Valentine's dinners, a cousin's wedding, winter weekends, Republic Day at school.
- March: Holi colours, board exam stress and relief, the first warm evenings.
- April: Baisakhi, Vishu or Poila Boishakh, new financial year, summer holiday plans.
- May: Family trips to the hills, mango season, birthdays that fall in peak summer.
- June: Results, new classes, the first monsoon rain, a new job or city.
- July: Monsoon walks, chai and pakoras, school and college reopening.
- August: Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, Friendship Day, Janmashtami.
- September: Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam, a long-weekend getaway.
- October: Navratri, Dussehra, Karwa Chauth, early Diwali shopping.
- November: Diwali, Bhai Dooj, rangoli, family gatherings, the first winter chill.
- December: Christmas, year-end trips, the annual family photo, and a closing page.
If one month was quiet, do not pad it. Merge two thin months onto a single spread and give the busy months more room.
Other ways to structure the year
Chronology is not the only option. If your year had one big storyline, a different spine may read better.
- By season: summer, monsoon, festive season and winter, four chapters of three to five pages each. Good for 16 to 20 pages.
- By theme: Home, Work, Travel, Food, Friends. Works well for a person who lived in two cities or changed jobs.
- By person: one section each for the kids, the grandparents, the pets. A strong choice when the book is a gift for a specific relative.
- Festival to festival: start at last Diwali and end at this Diwali. This feels natural to many Indian families.
Choosing photos from your phone
Open your gallery and filter by month rather than scrolling the whole year at once. Then follow this order, which keeps the job from becoming exhausting.
- Start with favourites. If you already hearted photos during the year, begin there. Most galleries on Android and iPhone let you view only favourites.
- Pick one anchor photo per month. This is the picture that best sums up the month. It may go large on a page.
- Add two supporting photos. Choose a different angle or mood: a wide scene, a close-up of faces, a small detail like a thali or a train ticket.
- Keep the people. Choose photos where faces are visible and expressive. A beautiful sunset without anyone in it rarely holds up as well in print as a laughing aunt.
- Add one imperfect photo. A blurry, chaotic birthday-cake moment often says more about the year than the posed one.
Resolution matters. Photos that were shared through WhatsApp are compressed and can look soft when printed on a full page. Whenever you can, pick the original from your phone gallery. If you send photos to the studio on WhatsApp, sending them as a document keeps the original quality.
What to leave out
A year in review is an edit, not an archive. Leave out screenshots, near-duplicates, photos of documents, group shots where someone is mid-blink, and anything dark or heavily zoomed. If two photos look nearly the same, keep the sharper one. Skip anything that would embarrass someone who will flip through the book. When unsure, ask whether you would be happy to see it printed at palm size in a family living room. If not, drop it.
How many pages and photos do you need?
Page count follows the number of moments you want to keep, not the other way round. As a rough guide for a year in review photo book, plan on two to four photos per month on a standard spread, with a few single-photo pages for the big events.
- 12 pages (₹1,199): about one page per month, around 18 to 28 photos in total. A tight, clean recap.
- 14 pages (₹1,399): one page per month plus an opening and closing page. Around 24 to 32 photos.
- 16 pages (₹1,599): a comfortable middle choice. Room for a festival or trip to take a full spread. Around 30 to 40 photos.
- 18 pages (₹1,799): good for a busy year with a wedding, a move or a new baby. Around 36 to 46 photos.
- 20 pages (₹1,999): the full story, with chapter openers, a family-wishes page and a final photo. Around 40 to 55 photos.
Fewer, larger photos nearly always look better than crowded pages. If you are torn between two sizes, choose the smaller book and cut harder. You can read more about balancing images and white space in our photo book layout and design tips.
Caption ideas that sound like you
Captions are what turn a nice photo book into a keepsake. Keep them short, one line or two, and write them the way you would say them aloud. Include a date, a place or a tiny detail that you will forget by next year, such as what the weather was like or what everyone ate.
- The plain fact: "March 2026. Holi at Nani's house, and nobody stayed clean."
- The inside joke: "The day Papa tried to drive in the hills and we all prayed."
- The small win: "First day at the new office. Chai in a paper cup."
- The thank-you: "Thank you for sitting with me through every exam night."
- The count: "3 trains, 2 delays, 1 very good dhaba."

Opening and closing pages
The first and last pages give the book a shape. For the opening page, use the one photo that sums up the year, with a title such as "Our 2026" and a single sentence that explains what the year felt like. A good example: "The year of new schools, a new house and too many cousins."
For the closing page, many people use a group photo from December or a short note to the person receiving the book. You can also list a few numbers (trips taken, birthdays celebrated, festivals shared) or end with a hopeful line about what you want next year to hold. Keep it warm and short.
Who a yearly book works for
The format is flexible, so think about the reader before you pick the structure.
- For your parents or in-laws: bigger photos, fewer captions, more family faces. See the gift for grandparents page for ideas on larger print and simple layouts.
- For a partner: include trips, small dates and a handwritten-style note on the last page.
- For your child's first or growing years: pair it with a baby first year photo book if you want a dedicated milestone volume.
- For yourself: a plain, honest recap, including the hard months. These books age well.
Making it with Ragnar Studios through WhatsApp
If you would rather not wrestle with layout software, we handle it in a simple chat flow. You send your photos and captions on WhatsApp, the studio designs the pages, and you see a preview before anything is printed. After you approve, the book is printed and delivered across India.
- Decide the page count (12 to 20 pages, from ₹1,199).
- Sort your photos into month folders on your phone and send them along with the captions.
- Review the preview and ask for changes, such as swapping a photo or fixing a spelling.
- Approve it, and the book goes to print.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting too late. Sort photos monthly or at least quarterly. Doing a whole year in one sitting is the reason most people never finish.
- Trying to include everything. More pages do not make a better book. A focused 14 pages beats a crowded 20.
- Skipping captions. In five years you will not remember who the person in the blue kurta was.
- Ignoring the hard months. A loss, a move or an illness is part of the year. You do not have to dwell on it, but a quiet, honest page can make the book feel real.
- Forgetting a title and date. Always put the year on the cover and spine of the story.
Frequently asked questions
How many pages should a year in review photo book have?
Between 12 and 20 pages works for most people. Twelve pages is about one page per month and fits a simple recap. Sixteen to 20 pages leaves room for festivals, trips and full-page favourites. If you are unsure, choose 16 pages and trim photos until each page breathes.
How many photos do I need for a yearly photo book?
Plan for about 20 to 55 photos, depending on the page count. A 12-page book comfortably holds 18 to 28 photos, while a 20-page book can carry 40 to 55. Fewer, larger images usually look better than packed pages, so be ruthless when editing.
What is the best way to pick photos from my phone for a year in review?
Filter your gallery by month, start with your favourites, and choose one anchor photo and two supporting photos for each month. Prefer sharp originals over WhatsApp-compressed copies, keep photos with visible faces, and skip screenshots and near-duplicates.
Should I organise a year in review by month or by theme?
Month by month is the easiest because your phone already sorts photos by date. Themes such as travel, food, work and friends suit a year with one big storyline or a move. Seasons and festival-to-festival layouts are also good choices, so pick whichever fits your year.
What should I write in captions for a year photo book?
Keep captions to one or two short lines. Add the month or place, one small detail you will forget, and a bit of your own voice. Examples include an inside joke, a small win, or a thank-you. Avoid long paragraphs, as they crowd the page.
How much does a year in review photo book cost in India?
At Ragnar Studios, a printed photo book of 12 to 20 pages starts from ₹1,199. The 12-page book is ₹1,199, 14 pages ₹1,399, 16 pages ₹1,599, 18 pages ₹1,799 and 20 pages ₹1,999. The price depends on the page count you choose.
Can I make a year in review photo book as a gift?
Yes. It suits parents, grandparents, a partner or a close friend, especially around New Year, Diwali or a birthday. Choose photos that include the receiver, add a personal note on the last page, and keep captions warm. It feels more personal than a store-bought present.
How do I send photos and captions for the book on WhatsApp?
Sort your photos into month folders on your phone, then send them to the studio on WhatsApp, ideally as documents to keep the original quality. Add your captions in a message or note. The studio designs the pages, shares a preview for your changes, and prints after you approve.
A year goes quickly, and a printed book is a good way to slow it down. If you want help turning your photos into 12 to 20 pages, start with the New Year gift photo book page.
